Krampfhaft - Makin' magic EP

Media_http3bpblogspot_wrdiv

Yet again, Rwina is bringing something special to the table with their 14th release and is quickly proving to become one of those "buy on sight" labels. One to watch for sure.

They have Dutch talent, Krampfhaft, bringing the label up yet another notch with this 4 tracker. Seemingly effortless, hooky synths grab hold of you in every track. A big, bright colourful sound is the where this all sits.Your ears just seem look into each track. Some great and yet subtle use of vocal elements only add more icing to the cake. From the bouncy vibes on I Needed You with its great skippy percussion right thought to the wonderfully airy, spacious journey of Makin Magic. The
vocal of that gets right under your skin too, you will be humming this one for days.

All in all, Krampfhaft has brought together a great realease for his Rwina debut. I'll be keeping an eye out for this new Dutch talent in the future.

This will be dropping on September 26 on 12" and with the digital release coing in a bit later on October 10.
There will be a bonus track with digital release too called Faux Art.

Modeselektor "Monkeytown" - MONKEYTOWN015

Media_httplostinasupe_tyvlc

Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary aka Modeselektor have put together something very special for their third and latest album Monkeytown. I was going to do a big write up on this but I think the clips here on their Soundcloud can do themselves more then enough justice. I really can't wait to get my hands on this!

Doshy - Suspiria EP

Media_httpfactmagimag_aiqzo

Rwina. A label based in Amsterdam has been making waves consistently in bass music. Diverse releases from the likes of Starkey, Eprom and plenty more have firmly established this Dutch label in many a record box. This next release from them with German producer Doshy, will do nothing but help the label go from strength to strength.

The title track of this 12", Suspiria comes at you with an infectious synth line and some great drum work. For some reason, it makes me think of the music to some movies I loved as a kid. This one will be getting heard a lot this Summer, no doubt about that.
Onto the B side. The next track, Milky Way delivers a meaty little beat sitting on top of this wonderfully sloppy bassline before it makes way for some lovely little 8 bit blips and bloops. Who doesn't enjoy those 8 bit sounds when the sound as nice as this. Now for B 2, Redworm. That wet feel to the bass returns on the this wonderful little bubbler of a track. Atmospheric sci-fi sounds sneaking around on there, while that simple yet effective beat drives things along.

As the lines between Dubstep, Glitch and grime become less defined this is one release that is certainly going to stand out. This 12" is going to be ending up in plenty of DJ bags this Summer.

This one is out on June 6th, at all good record stores. Digi will be about 2 weeks later with a bonus track from Doshy and Unik - Lazor Blaster

DJ Madd - Blank Space EP

Media_httpwwwchemical_rgyzu

Number 14 from Black Box brings us this 4 tracker from DJ Madd. A man for me is one of the highlights in this 2nd renascence that seems to be looming on the horizon for Dubstep. Some people are starting to call the newest evolution of Dubstep, "the Dungeon sound". I for one, would rather be calling it proper Dubstep but how am I to argue with the forums, eh?

The title track, Blank Space comes in with a sparse yet solid beat with some tech stabs, digital feel to it all and that all important sub sitting so well underneath. Pitfall is moody as you like and would be my track of choice to drop in a club. Some fantastically minimal drums, an eastern vibe flowing of the syths and that bass stab that keeps popping in on there works a treat too. Onto the 3rd track in, this one sees DJ Madd getting a whole lot busier. Great drums and that snarling bass working so well under them makes for a beast for the dancefloor. The final track from this sees Bristols Phaeleh getting on on the action. This was a match made in heaven. Ritual is going to be heard all over the place in the coming months. Solid drum work with those great little keys underneath and brought together by that vocal that just hooks itself into your hearing everytime it comes up. The bass on that one is something special too.

This is going to be a big release for DJ Madd and for Black Box. Available in all the usual places on June 27th.

Buy on sight.

Marasm - 24

Marasm - 24
Mad EP - Beat Downs & Down Beats

Media_httpsdsimgcomim_hhakc

For their 24th release, Parisian label Marasm bring Mad EP to the table with Beat Downs & Down Beats.

The featuring of vocal talents from Nongenetic and Vandell Harris on two of the four tracks was always going to set things up nicely for this slice of abstract Hiphop. Not a term I like to use to often but there you have it.

Nongentic's intelligent flow pours itself over the hypnotic synth laden beats over the the A1 track, Be Polite. There is a slight techy futuristic feel to this and gets the release off to a great start. Things take a swing in a different direction for Brooklyn Freestyle. This is a frenetic live improve recorded at a Mad EP show a while back in Brooklyn, New York in 2005.
N2 Deep opens the B-side and for me it's the stand out track of the release too. A beautiful marriage of subtle yet gently tough drums, little hints of synth work and the stunning cello playing of Mad EP himself. Quiet simple a wonderful track. B2 Lettin the Wheel Go features the second vocalist on the release Vandell Harris. His meaningful lyrics run themselves over and around a solid little beat, while we are treated to more
of Mad EP and his cello playing skills.

All in all, Marasm has put together a good solid 12" here. Something a little bit different but a little bit good too.

Keep an eye out for this one. Available in all good stores now.

Prime Audio 004

Media_httpwwwchemical_kbode

Here we go. Prime Audio return with the forth release on this label based in Dover on the south coast of the UK. You've got 3 tracks on this one each coming from a slightly different angle but all pushing a techy, futuristic dancefloor dominating sound.
The A track on the release from "Death Proof" sees KGB on his own going in hard and flips to a weird sci-fi b-movie vibe on the breakdown and some great little bits of percussion clattering around to keep pushing this along. The B sees KGB & Twisted bringing what is the standout track on the release for me. "Energy" has this busy, robotic churn on it bassline that can't help but suck you in. This will be doing some serious damage across many a dancefloor. Label boss Suspect and Panick round off the release with "Game Over". This one is a grower for sure. Great percussion with a great bass sound that gets right under your skin. Great vibe on the breakdown too with that odd little synth.
All in all, another solid release from Prime Audio. Keep an eye out for this label in the future...

Out now at all the usual stores.

LOST - A Methodology Records Compliation

Media_httpi71photobuc_duplq

Seems to me that lately there's been a bit of a backlash on the whole agro, rowdy end of Dubstep recently. More and more artists and labels moving away from the sound and back to something with more substance and value to it. Track that do an awful lot more then just go off in the dance. I am very happy to see this swing in direction gather momentum.

Forensics, the man behind Methodology has brought together a compilation that has the depth, ingenuity and substance that seems to have been lost on certain peoples angles on Dubstep. I mention substance again because, to my ears, a lot of stuff released in the last 18 months lacks it to a certain extent. Electronic music can have plenty more to it, it can even have a soul too. This release proves that.

Now as a compilation, Forensics has done a great job of getting this working as unit. All the artists involved have brought something special together for this one. To name a few, King Slaff, Kuoyah, Be-1ne and Grooki have, after a few listens, been the tracks that really grabbed my attention. In particular, the Grooki track jumped out at me the most. Great delay work, a fantastic organic feeon the bass and the use of those vinyl crackles gel so well with everything. A lovely piece of music.

Lost is one to keep an eye and an ear out for in early 2011. To simply put it, a wonderful selection of artists on a great compilation.

To hear some audio head over to the Methodology Records Youtube channel.

Myspace.

Release date: 10/01/2011 at usual outlets.

APC006 - T-Polar - Zero

Media_httpwwwacroplan_aeajp

Now this one really caught me off guard. The guys at Acroplane have a bit of a gem here. T-Polar was mentioned to me on some couch, at some party awhile back but I never looked him up. I must say that I'm very glad to know his work now.
Beautiful synth work, that almost feels organic in it's delivery and a sweet, warm feel to the drums that doesn't feel overly forced. All of which is brought together by those wonderfully sourced vocal snips and samples. "Zero" feels that it is the fruit of inspriation from a keen ear for all types of music. It definitely has some soul. And Techno, Disco, House... I'll stop there. This will be getting lots of play in my house, I'm sure it will in yours too. Marvelous stuff.

Available October 25th.

!Kaboogie 003

Media_httpwwwkaboogie_gdcjv

There was a wee bit of a delay on the release for this but it was worth waiting for. Dublins !Kaboogie Records bring a big lump of bass to the table with their Rapid Fire Buzzer EP. Here we have 4 tracks that do a pretty good job of showing folk what !Kaboogie is all about. From the tension filled stabs of Badman Banker, the hectic energy of Playtime, the synthy goodness of The Count or to the fat as you like bass of Bass Crunchers this EP delivers. One for the bag for many a dj for sure.
If I had to pick a standout track off this, I would have to go for Bass Crunchers from Mad EP. Something about it sits right with me at the moment, the vibe on the drums, those orchestral stabs work a treat and from the breakdown on is just killer. I need more of those wicked breaks on the end though.
A few more releases like this and the boys from Dublin will definitely be making their mark even stronger on modern bass music. All we have to do now is wait for the next one to drop from !Kaboogie...
